BALSHALA
The Balshala program associated with HTS of Augusta was started in the late 1970s to provide children an exposure to beliefs and practices of the Hindu religion. A curriculum which comprises of Sanskrit hymns, bhajans and stories from sacred texts and epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata are used to connect children to the spiritual and moral values of the Hindu philosophy. Arts & crafts, Hindi class, and other supporting activities of the program help to connect children with their cultural heritage.
Balshala is open to children (ages 4 - 12 years) of HTS members. The program depends on parent volunteers to provide instruction as well as to support all other operational tasks.
Classes and meetings are scheduled in the HTS premises on designated Sundays starting in September as published in the yearly Balshala calendar. An End of Year performance and lunch is traditionally scheduled around Mother's Day in early May. Volunteer run Balshala summer camps are generally offered on selected weekends in June/July.
